Before Mage left Byzantine, and before he even got into hired arm work, he studied the way of Byzantine's magic. He was thrown into academies with Wren, and they were always competing with each other's skills. It was obsessive, but eventually Mage stopped focusing on it. 

Wren, however, saw his blind eye as disrespect. So for most of his life on Byzantine, every Halloween night, Wren would enact her magical wrath upon Mage and he would always defeat her.

After Mage moved, Wren had to search for Mage, since warping magic was very specific and not linked to people. Soon enough, she would find him again.

"Behold! My wrath shall be known!"
